Distinguished Lecturer Talk: DATA CENTER NETWORKING at NIT Calicut on 25 July 2018

DATA CENTER NETWORKING

This lecture focuses on data center networking. Data centers and their requirements are first introduced. Then a detailed presentation of several data center network architectures and their relative merits is given. Conventional electrical switching architectures such as fat tree and VL2 are first presented and compared.  Subsequently, the lecture will discuss several recent proposals on incorporating optical switching in the data center network. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of protocol and performance issues and some emerging topics.

 

About the Speaker

Suresh Subramaniam received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1997. His research interests are in the architectural, algorithmic, and performance aspects of communication networks, with current emphasis on optical networks, cloud computing, and data center networks. He has published over 185peer-reviewed papers in these areas. Dr. Subramaniam is a co-editor of three books on optical networking. He has served as TPC Co-Chair for Globecom 2016 ONS, LANMAN 2014, INFOCOM 2013, ANTS 2008, ICC 2007 ONS, and Globecom 2006 ONS. He is or has been on the editorial boards of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEEE/OSA Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, Elsevier Optical Switching and Networking, Springer Photonic Network Communications, and KICS Journal of Communications and Networks. During 2012 and 2013, he served as the elected Chair of the IEEE Communication Society Optical Networking Technical Committee. He is a co-recipient of Best Paper Awards at ICC 2006 ONS and at the 1997 SPIE Conference on All-Optical Communication Systems. He received the 2017 SEAS Distinguished Researcher Award from George Washington University. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Speaker Profile: L.K.Prasad is currently the Managing Director of Acceleron Labs Pvt Ltd Bangalore. He  has more than 24 years of experience in telecom and networking space and held various leadership positions in Mistral Solutions Pvt Ltd and Processor System (I) Pvt Ltd in his earlier engagements. He is holding degree B.Tech. in Electronics from NIT Calicut and M.Tech. in Digital Communication from Bangalore University.

Abstract: The seminar will start with an overview of the Fourth Industrial revolution based on Cyber physical production systems and the role of AI and Blockchain. Student Branch Chapter Inauguration

The event started in the presence of Dr. Sameer S. M., IEEE Kerala Chair, Dr. Lillykutty Jacob, ComSoc Kerala Chair, Dr. A. V. Babu, Branch Chapter Advisor, Mr. Anand M. (C-DoT, Bangalore), the speaker for the day, and Ms. Poornima S., the Branch Chapter Chair. The faculty members of NIT Calicut, IEEE ComSoc student members and other IEEE student members were in attendance. The inauguration ceremony started off with a silent prayer. The audience repeated the IEEE Code of Ethics as prompted by Meljo, an IEEE student member. Dr. A. V. Babu welcomed the Chief guest Dr. Sameer S. M., the office bearers, and all IEEE student members and faculty. The IEEE ComSoc Student Branch was officially inaugurated by Dr. Sameer S. M. with a message to use this Society as a networking platform and to use the vast resources including webinars and other resources offered by IEEE. Dr. Lillykutty Jacob felicitated the event and urged the members to use this platform as an inspiration for their professional growth. Ms. Poornima S. thanked the dignitaries on the dais and the audience for gracing the occasion.

 

Technical Talk (10:45am-1pm)

Mr. Anand M., a Senior Research Engineer at the Centre for Development of Telematics, Bangalore, delivered a talk on ‘How to Contribute to 5G Standardization efforts in India?’.  He briefed us on the standardization process in India and abroad, and how an academician can contribute towards this effort. He mentioned about the opportunities in the different standardization bodies like IEEE, TDSI, BIS, TEC, etc. He pointed towards the leverage we can have in the standardization bodies if we produce patents for our findings followed by paper publications.  He concluded the talk with a message that networking through these platforms early in our career as student members will help us in our professional endeavors.

 

Talk on Interoperability, Security, and Reliability for a Scalable Internet of Things on 10th Feb at IIITM-K

Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Kerala in association with IEEE Communications Society Kerala Chapter and ACM Trivandrum Professional Chapter organized a talk on 10/02/2018 on the topic “Interoperability, Security, and Reliability for a scalable Internet of Things” by renowned speaker Prof.Dr.-Ing Axel Sikora from Institute of Reliable Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics (ivESK), Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany. The session embarked on the existing state of the art in the most promising and rapidly evolving application fields of the Internet of Things.  It also laid focus on the potential challenges related to the field.

 

About the Speaker

Dr. Axel Sikora is a distinguished personality with rich industrial and academic experience. His fruitful career encompasses prominent positions in telecommunication and semiconductor industries, Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Loerrach and Offenburg University of Applied Sciences. Since 2016, he is also deputy member of the board and head of the “Software Solutions” division at Hahn-Schickard Association of Applied Research (Germany), one of the leading institutes around Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) for Industry 4.0 applications in Germany. In 2002, he founded the Steinbeis Transfer Center Embedded Design and Networking, which was successfully spun off as STACKFORCE GmbH in 2014.


The talk was acknowledged positively by attendees comprising of industrialists, practitioners and research scholars who were passionate about the uprising technology.
